Laugh, Don't Cry: Holiday Comedy Events

Golden Girls
Jose Guzman Colon
Heklina (Dorothy), Cookie Dough (Sophia), Pollo Del Mar (Rose) and Matthew Martin (Blanche) - seated) in The Golden Girls: “The Christmas Episodes”.

Not sure how to spend the holidays? Let The Bay Citizen help! This is the first in a week-long series of event roundups. Look for film happenings tomorrow.

Old Jews Telling Jokes

Tikva Records, Dec. 13, 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., Free

Sam Hoffman and Eric Spiegelman, the producers of Old Jews Telling Jokes, will appear at the Jewish record store pop-up, Tikva. What is Old Jews Telling Jokes? It’s exactly what it sounds like. Hoffman, Spigelman, and their partners rove around the country filming Jewish men and women over 60 telling jokes and then post them to their website. They’ve also published a book.

Paula Poundstone’s Second Annual Ha Ha Ho Ho Holiday Show

Palace of the Fine Arts, Dec. 17, 8 p.m., $35-$40

Comedian Paula Poundstone, a regular on the NPR quiz show, "Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me", stops in San Francisco to spread some holiday cheer.

Kung Pao Kosher Comedy

The New Asia Restaurant, Dec. 23-Dec. 25, Various Times, $42-$62

For the 19th year in a row, comedian Lisa Geduldig presents a night of Jewish comedy on Christmas, in a Chinese restaurant.  This year, Elayne Boosler headlines a roster of performers at the New Asia Restaurant. Attendees will be seated at tables with names like Gilda Radner, Meshugganah, and Chopped Liver. Dinner shows include a buffet of (non-Kosher) Chinese food, including fortune cookies stuffed with Yiddish proverbs.

The Golden Girls: The Christmas Episodes

Victoria Theater, Dec. 1-Dec. 23, 8 p.m., $25-$30

A show centered around four single, retired women living in Florida together who routinely hash over their sexual exploits? When reflecting on the place of "The Golden Girls" in television history, it’s hard not to wonder how the show ever made it on the air. In addition to female senior protagonists, "The Golden Girls" had a host of episodes with gay characters. A quartet of San Francisco’s most celebrated drag queens (Heklina, Cookie Dough, Pollo del Mar, and Matthew Martin) bring two of those episodes to life on stage in glorious Christmas sweaters. The performance is a spoof, but mostly an homage, and a hilarious one to boot.

Laughter Against the Machine, New Year’s Eve Edition

Phoenix Theater, Dec. 29-Dec. 31, Various Times, $20-$25

W. Kamau Bell, Nato Green, and Janine Brito present a New Year’s edition of the show they’ve been touring the country with. “Laughter Against the Machine”, a decidedly political show, has taken them from Red States to Occupy Wall Street camps.
